Buying gifts for our fellow book clubs members brings me a lot of joy to think about! We have such special moments together in every season (literally and figuratively) and begin to know a lot about each other during this shared time.
Maybe you’re shopping for your book club hostess, looking for something thoughtful for a fellow book club member, or trying to find an ideal holiday gift for the reader in your life, and it can be a bit challenging to move beyond the obvious gift choices.
Because of that, we worked hard to find some great book club member gifts that aren’t quite so obvious, or at the very least, are a bit more chic and on trend.
When buying for a book lover, it can be fun to buy something that’s not-so-quite “on the nose”, but rather something that’s book adjacent. At least, I think that can be a fun twist!
After hosting and attending my beloved book club for a long time, I have a few ideas about gifts for book lovers (including audiobook lovers – find me in my kitchen washing dishes with my airpods in!). Personally, I think a great, creative book club gift can aim to celebrate the entire experience of reading and book culture, not just the books themselves, which brings me joy!
Let’s explore some thoughtful gifts that acknowledge cozy reading rituals, the aesthetic spaces we create to enjoy our reads, and all those little moments that make book club gatherings so special.
For the Book Club Host Who Deserves Something Special
As you’re likely well aware, there’s so much work that goes into hosting book club:
Buying and prepping the snacks, preparing the wine and drink selection, arranging childcare plans, making sure there are enough seats, frantically vacuuming up all the dog hair (🙋🏻♀️), moving the conversation along, etc. etc.
In my book club we take turns hosting, which alleviates the pressure from one person having to do all the work every month (or so). I’ve heard for other book clubs that one person hosts every time (whether they really want to or not!), and others go out to eat. Do you have a routine?
If you meet regularly in someone’s home for book club and think a special gift is in order for your host, here are a few fun gift ideas below for your hostess with the mostess:
A Beautiful Charcuterie Board Set is such a game-changer for book club entertaining (any any entertaining, really). Book clubs are known for their enjoyment of lovely libations while discussing books, and having a gorgeous wood board makes everything feel so much more elevated, and also simple — it’s the entertaining “go to”. I personally like to have a few differently sized boards (shapes too! — like these Christmas cuties), depending on the size of the group, as well as the amount of cheese / meat & accompanying goodies you want to serve.
Cloth napkins are a simple, yet classic gift that can be enjoyed year round, and are a beautiful compliment to a wooden board. By now you probably know your host fairly well, so you can take a guess as to whether she (or he) would something a bit trendier, colorful, modern, or classic.
Cheese knives, of course, serve as the perfect gift for someone who enjoys hosting, or does so often. They are *just* the gift, if you don’t want to spend too much, but would love to treat your host. If you want to add a bit more to the present, grab a beautiful cheese from your market and even an antique dish, the cloth napkins we discussed, or a lovely kitchen hand towel. I just received a fun kitchen hand towel from a friend and it reminds me of her every time I use it!
Beautiful wine glasses are another winner. I am a big fan of glassware and have various types and colors for seasonal gatherings. These ribbed white wine and red wine glasses bring a level of sophistication, and these stemmed, chic colorful wine glasses bring the fun! Every time your host uses them, they’ll think of your thoughtful group.
Book Club Gift Ideas That Elevate the Reading Experience
Now, for the readers in your group (hopefully that’s everyone!), here are some ideas that will enhance their bookish lifestyle (PS – we have a rule that you HAVE to read the book to attend book club. This is steadfast, as we want to be sure that the focus is the book, though we spend plenty of time talking about life happenings as well.):
A High-Quality Reading Light might sound practical and boring, but hear me out. The rechargeable ones that clip onto books and have multiple brightness settings? Those are pretty awesome for anyone who reads in bed or loves those cozy reading nooks. In our book club, we’re all partnered up, so this makes a difference if a spouse wants to sleep and the other wants to stay up reading. One of the keys here is choosing a reading light with warm settings that don’t strain your eyes during late-night page-turning sessions.
Blue Light Blocking Reading Glasses (tortoise shell pattern 😍) are having a moment right now, and for good reason. Even if someone doesn’t normally wear glasses (clear cuties), these can make such a difference during long reading sessions, especially if they’re switching between physical books and e-readers throughout the day.
A Luxury Reading Pillow or Wedge is one of those gifts that sounds a little extra until you try it. The ones with arms for support and pockets for holding books, phones, and reading glasses? Your book club friends will wonder how they ever lived without one. Reminds me of a breastfeeding pillow? Definitely didn’t know I needed that until I had it.
A book subscription box for Adults, YA, and Tweens, that features a newly released box and wrapped gifts every month! This concept is so clever and perfect for book lovers who want that element of surprise. A lot of privately owned bookstores offer “blind date with a book“, which is so fun! You receive a wrapped book with a description and then it’s yours to read for the month. Check your local book store to see if they have this option. Conversely, you could create your own “blind date with a book” gift with these cute supplies.
Literary Tea pairs beautifully with reading habits. This beautiful tin features booked themed loose leaf teas, while Chapters & Co. tea features bags covered lovely artwork boasting various reading scenes: the coziest bedroom, a cheerful picnic, and an inviting cafe scene. This Simpson & Vail Literary Tea tin has a classic, yet trendy vibe, boasting black and white artwork.
Literary-Themed Candles create the perfect reading ambiance. These scents by CE Craft Candles feature fun descriptions creating a bookish connection. For instance, Coffee & A Book is described as: “a unique blend of freshly brewed coffee, starting a fresh book, and spending the day reading.” I love the Book Boyfriend Candle which is described as: “A unique blend of butterflies in your stomach, rereading the page, and falling in love with a fictional man.” 😂 For another option, this book-shaped candle is super cool! It would be really fun lit during book club, or as decor on a sideboard.
Whimsical Literary Art Prints add personality to a book lover’s space without being too obvious about it. I love prints that capture the magic of reading and these do so in an artistic way. It would look beautiful in a home office, or even a kitchen.
Book-Themed Keychains and Small Accessories from brands like Rifle Paper Co. are such thoughtful little gifts that book lovers will use on the daily. There’s something special about carrying a beautiful reminder of your favorite hobby with you everywhere you go! These make perfect stocking stuffers or additions to a larger gift.
Literary Jigsaw Puzzles combine two beloved hobbies and create such a cozy activity for quiet evenings and weekends. I really enjoyed putting together various beautiful, whimsical scenes when we were cozy inside post-holidays last year. Here are a few beautiful options for your bookish friend so they can do the same. They’re perfect for book club members who love a meditative activity between reads, especially during the colder months.
Beautiful Notecards with Book Motifs are super practical gifts that book lovers will put to good use and appreciate. Whether it’s thank you notes, book club invitations, or just staying in touch with fellow readers, having gorgeous stationery makes written messages feel more special. Notecards like this one featuring stacks of books are particularly charming.
Nothing says “I love book club” quite like a personalized gift, and some of these options are so much more thoughtful than you’d expect:
Custom book nooks are these incredible miniature dioramas that fit between books on a shelf. You can find ones that light up and represent scenes from classic novels or general bookish themes. They’re so sweet and great conversation starters!
Personalized library stamps or embossers for the book club member who’s always lending books! It’s practical but also makes them feel like they have their own personal library—isn’t that everyone’s dream?!
A beautiful pen and literay notepad pairs beautifully with a great book. I’m not sure about you, but many of us take notes on our current book to report back to book club (I will absolutely forget my thoughts if they are not written down for quick recall). A great pen elevates this experience and is something that I always reach for. As a matter of fact, one of our book club members MADE us all a gorgeous pen that I treasure!
I also stumbled upon these book review sticky notes and they would be such a fun novelty gift for everyone! These would be really helpful as a reader works to recall all their notes that informed their rating. Love this idea!
The Art of Thoughtful Presentation
This is probably not new information for you, but I tend to think that presentation matters almost as much as the gift itself. Even a simple gift feels special when you put a little thought into how you present it. But, don’t put too much pressure on yourself here. Just do what you can. There are some super sweet and cheerful reusable bags that are book themed and also serve as a great gift wrap, which makes life for you that much easier. Grab a little tissue paper and maybe a cute bow if you have time, and you’re done!
Consider creating a little “book club gift kit” by bundling a few smaller items together—maybe a fancy bookmark, some gourmet tea, and a cute notebook for jotting down favorite quotes. Put it all in a beautiful box or little basket, and done! You’ve created something that’s not only curated, but intentional.
Wrapping Up Book Club Gift Giving
The best book club gift ideas are the ones that show you’re invested in your fellow readers. If someone mentioned they keep losing their place in books, then get them a really beautiful, substantial bookmark, like these whimsical magnetic bookmarks or this lovely Liberty placeholder. Does the hostess always apologize for not having enough wine glasses? Beautiful stemware it is. Looking for book club Christmas gifts that will be remembered? Think about what would enhance their actual reading experience.
Sometimes the most appreciated gifts for book club members are the ones that acknowledge the real experience of book club. A beautiful notebook for jotting down discussion questions, a stylish canvas tote bag for carrying books and wine, or even just really great chocolate that everyone can share—these things matter because they’re part of the actual ritual of coming together to talk about books.
Whether you’re shopping for luxury gifts for book lovers or searching for inexpensive gifts for book club members, the goal is to find unique gifts for book lovers that add a little joy to this lovely tradition to which we all commit ourselves. The books aren’t the only thing that make our time together so special — it’s the community and conversations, and the thoughtful little touches that make it all feel so fulfilling.
What are some of your favorite book club gift ideas? I’m always looking for new inspiration, especially as we head into the gift-giving season!
