Incorporating Barnyard Elements at Our Little Blue Truck Birthday Party

As I was thinking about incorporating the farm animals that are Little Blue’s buddies, I decided it was simplest to just buy a few small figurines (I couldn’t find any that we already had on hand). We decided to buy them bundled with a little barn, which then also ended up being a birthday gift for my daughter. Two-in-one! I’m sure many of you already have these little guys in toy bins, which makes things even easier when planning your own Little Blue Truck party supplies, and easier on the budget.

I then grabbed little hay bales that I DID have in storage — believe it or not! — and stacked them to add some layers and height, topped with a little birthday hat! That teeny hat was just the cutest addition, and I was happy to find the perfect spot for it.

Little Blue Birthday Party Food Ideas

We kept the food simple for this party, with kid-friendly options like cut-up veggies and dip, chips, chicken nuggets and french fries. I also set out brie and an olive medley, and homemade Manchego truffle kettle chips as apps for the adults, along with other cheeses.

I outsourced some of the food from a local, high-quality deli and grabbed picnic-like items that fit the theme perfectly. As much as I love to cook, I did choose to purchase several things for this party.

With little kids, I find it hard to have all the details in place, plus a cake baked, house clean for the party, beverages cooled, glasses clean prepped, gifts wrapped, and so on. 🤪 You get it, I’m sure. This is an area that I’ve learned to outsource when needed, and I am so appreciative of being able to do so.

If you’re thinking through what to serve at your Little Blue Truck themed birthday, picnic bites would be a great option which fits the outdoor-on-the-farm theme.

You could grab slider rolls and make little ham and cheese (brie or cheddar) sandwiches, with some veggie options sandwich options as well. If it’s a winter party, try a warmed slider recipe like the one below, that can be made in bulk, along with a nice, warm soup and an optional salad.

More recently, I’ve tried to make meals that can be deconstructed, so I’m not making a meal for the adults and then also throwing in pizza, fries, and/or nuggets, for the kids while paying attention to the timing of it all and washing a bunch of sheet pans later.

Here’s a fun way to serve the food:

Just take a few minutes to think through what your stress level may be that day and what you’re willing and wanting to take on. This is important to help you feel be able to enjoy the party.

Little Blue Truck Party Ideas: Budget-Friendly Tips & Creative Touches

Focus on what brings your child joy. A fun accent balloon, coupled with some colorful regular balloons, is a wonderful way to make things feel festive and exciting. Adding playful pops of color in this way is fun and festive, and it can be the main part of the decor without breaking the bank.

Here’s a playful presentation with balloons that show’s just how far they can go in terms of decor:

Keep things simple, yet creative. There is a lot of content that encourages parents to throw over-the-top parties for our children, and while I think those are fun and really cool from time-to-time, I also think it’s unsustainable and unrealistic for most. Allow yourself to do what works for you and your family in this regard.

Search your house for things you already have that can be used for the table. Or, ask a friend to borrow serving pieces, a tablecloth, and so on. I don’t think every party for a child needs to be riddled with new and shiny things. It can be really fun to pull out the same tablecloth for birthdays — it signals that an exciting celebration is underway and grounds children in tradition. I’ve collected a few over the years that I now rotate for birthdays and seasons. I do love tablecloths, so I can’t say that my collection doesn’t continue to grow from time-to-time!

Little Blue Truck printables are a lifesaver! I printed the Little Blue Truck face mask printable, as well as coloring pages. Simple, accessible, and fun for the kids.

Create confetti from colored paper to sprinkle on the table or other surfaces in the party area. Just use paper in different shades of blue, or colors that fit the party theme. Kiddos can help with this activity, too!

Streamers are a hit and super affordable! Hang them from a door frame, twist two colors together and have them reach from the center of the ceiling to the outer part of the room. I do recommend starting this a day (or more) in advance, just because they can be the type of decor item that requires a little more time.

Have your child create their own additions for the party through painting, coloring, Lego builds, etc.. Often, kids are so excited to be included in this way, and it adds such a special, warm touch.

Play a fun playlist on Spotify or use a soundtrack from a show or movie that your child loves. This costs no money and really amplifies the experience.

Blue Gingham Paper Plates These light blue checkered plates and napkins set add a perfect picnic-inspired touch to the Little Blue Truck birthday celebration. They can work for a pastel party, or the classic version. Make sure to buy enough plates for apps, the meal, and dessert (if you are doing all three). I’ve made this mistake before! I always love a Meri Meri option as well.

Mini Hay Bale Decorations These are those cute, authentic-looking hay bales pictured above that add dimension and farm charm to the tablescape. I repurposed some I had bought for a different party I held for my son a few years ago — I think it was a farm and Minecraft blended theme. That was a tricky one to pull off!
