Colorful Cocktails Are Having a Moment
For me, colorful cocktails are always “in”! Cheerful color is always encouraged and completely embraced — all the vibrancy, all the joy, all the fun. It’s a simple (and often powerful way) to open ourselves to the uplift that color offers.
That said, color IS having a moment right now! Which, I’m 100% here for. How about you? Instead of having to comb through Pinterest and dig through lovely English decor inspired photos (I’m in the States), I can find all the patterned, scalloped, colorful goodies in all the stores. I just love this easy access. Color has been welcomed into the home, our wardrobes, and our food and drink! And interestingly…
…when we see a beautifully colored cocktail, our brain actually releases dopamine before we’ve even tasted it, essentially priming us for a more enjoyable experience.
This is why a bright, colorful alcoholic drink at a party doesn’t just look appealing. It’s sort of wild, but it actually makes us feel more festive and ready to celebrate. I imagine you can connect to this if you notice how you feel when looking at a colorful clothing item, wallpaper, or pillow. This certainly doesn’t just apply to colorful cocktails!
Beyond this, colorful drinks also create a shareable moment and can serve as a conversation starter. When you hand someone a drink that’s aesthetically appealing, my hope is that you’re nonverbally communicating that your guest is worth the extra effort, that this gathering is special, and that you’ve thought about creating an experience. This is truly a gift for a guest.
What I love most about colorful cocktails is how they democratize the “wow factor” at parties, but without too much extra effort on your part.
A simple vodka cocktail can become a magical experience when it’s the color of a soft summer sunset. A basic gin and tonic can transform into something especially stunning with the addition of butterfly pea flower, shifting from blue to purple. These visual moments elevate the entire atmosphere of a gathering. In moments, your lovely garden party feels like it’s taking place at The Tuileries Gardens and your summer book club meeting becomes a sophisticated (and still down-to-earth) soirée.
There’s also a playfulness to colorful drinks that breaks down social barriers in the best (and maybe one of the easiest?) ways possible. I’ve seen reserved guests become animated when presented with colorful cocktail options, immediately chatting about which color to choose and why. It’s an instant icebreaker that gets people talking, laughing, and engaging with each other. We’re all trying to create meaningful connections & memorable experiences, and something as simple as a pastel pink or French-blue drink can be the catalyst that shifts a lovely fête into a connective one.
What Makes a Cocktail Colorful?
It’s actually not all that challenging to create a stunningly colorful drink. I love this for us! Most colored drinks get their vibrant hues from a surprisingly simple combination of ingredients, many of which you can easily find at your local liquor store or grocery store.
Colorful Liqueurs and Spirits are often the stars of the show in brilliantly colored cocktails. Blue Curaçao delivers shades of blue, Chambord (and other raspberry liqueurs) create deep purples and rich reds, Midori brings a bright melon green, and Aperol or Campari provide gorgeous orange tones. These spirits add color while contributing distinct flavors to create unique depth in a cocktail recipe.
Fresh Fruits and Juices provide the opportunity for a lovely, natural palette. Muddled berries create beautiful pinks and reds, fresh citrus juices bring cheerful yellows and oranges, and ingredients like watermelon or blood oranges can produce the most stunning natural gradients. Using fruit also allows colorful alcoholic drinks to taste fresh.
Specialty Syrups and Natural Ingredients offer so many neat creative possibilities. Grenadine adds a classic cherry red, while butterfly pea flower tea creates a magical blue that actually changes color when you add citrus (hello, purple!). I have both of these on hand to make fun drinks for my kids. We call them “special drinks”. Matcha powder gives drinks a verdant green hue, and activated charcoal creates dramatic blacks for Halloween cocktails. You can find many of these specialty ingredients easily online, which makes it super easy to experiment at home.
Garnishing is SO fun when rounding out colorful alcohol drinks. This is one of my favorite aspects! A cocktail might have a beautiful base color, but it’s the finishing touches, like a sprig of fresh mint, a slice of vibrant fruit, edible flowers, or colorful striped cocktail umbrellas, that take it from pretty to breathtaking, adding texture, depth, and olfactory pleasure.
