If you’re wondering what to wear to the soccer field this season, you’re in the right place.

When soccer season starts in the fall (late summer here), it’s coupled with back to school and back to busy, for all of us, I’m sure!

For this reason, I often have a bit of a mom uniform going, which shifts based on the weather. That uniform is often in soccer mom clothes mode, as we shift into soccer practice several nights a week after work & school, with games on the weekends peppered between other plans. I’m sure many of you can relate!

So, this soccer mom mode leads to trying to find the perpetual balance with the desire to looking put together enough for day-to-day commitments and also comfort leading into the sport schedule.

If you’re wondering, “what does a soccer mom look like?” or “what do soccer moms wear?”, the answer is – anything she wants to look like that can meet her needs for that day! Personally, I like to look a little bit stylish (at least to my eye), while feeling comfortable and weather appropriate.

I always appreciate a little outfit inspiration, so I’m sharing some ideas for soccer mom outfits, so you, too, can have your soccer mom look and soccer mom style ready, without having to think twice on Saturday morning (or Tuesday and Thursday evenings)!

My hope is that you can use a lot of what you already have in your closet to put these looks together, but links are included in case you would like few wardrobe refreshes.

What Is The Soccer Mom Aesthetic?

Honestly? It’s whatever works for you on any given day, which is exactly what makes it great.

The soccer mom aesthetic isn’t a rigid dress code. It’s more of a mindset: comfortable enough to chase a toddler across the field (if necessary), stylish enough to feel like yourself, and practical enough to go from a morning game straight to wherever the day takes you next (play dates, book club, family celebrations, out to lunch).

Some days that will look a bit more chic because you had time to iron your white button down, paired with your favorite jeans, Sambas, and trendy tote. Other days it’s full athleisure because it’s 7am and comfort is key. And some days it’s full spirit wear because your kid asked you to wear their team colors and why not?! You are willing to brandish team colors for your soccer star!

The soccer mom look has evolved well beyond the tired stereotypes. Today’s soccer mom style is really just a reflection of your personal taste, filtered through the lens of “I’m going to be outside for a few hours, potentially in unpredictable weather, and I’d like to enjoy myself and feel good about what I’m wearing.” Comfort is non-negotiable. Beyond that, it’s all yours.

So, don’t feel pressure to look a certain way on the sidelines. The ideas below are just that – ideas – that are meant to spark a little inspiration for days when you want to put a fun outfit together, but maybe your brain is tired. Take what works for you and leave the rest!

I really like this look — it’s dressed up enough to take you from the market, to the game, to a post-game activity afterward (my favorite weekend agenda!). When I think of a spirit wear soccer mom look, I immediately think of wearing your child’s jersey or team logo.

I wear my son’s shirt from the previous season because I’ve missed the virtual spirit store’s opening both seasons! Also, during his first season he told me I wasn’t a big enough fan because I didn’t wear his team’s jersey or colors, so I turned that around quickly! So, note to us all — stay on top of spirit store deadlines!

This year I did not miss the store merch window, and bought a sweatshirt for the colder days. If you don’t have team merch, a cool soccer jersey from your favorite national or MLS team, or your kid’s favorite team / player, would be a perfect fit. There are so many super cool jerseys — there’s literally a whole world of “kits” (soccer uniforms) out there. Tie up the top and pair it with some baggy or barrel jeans, or a slip skirt if you’re feeling a little more chic that day.

If it’s easier, you can also just buy a basic short sleeve and a long sleeve shirt or sweater in your athlete’s team color from your clothing brand of choice. Perfect if you’re not jersey person or want options!

You likely have most of these classics available to you. To lean into a more chic soccer mom style, grab a pair of your favorite jeans and pair it with a button down — crisp white always looks wonderful, but a colored button down is great too (team colors like we discussed?!).

A comfortable, trendy, or classic pair of sneakers will do well here. I have this Manchester United dad cap and I love it so much. It’s the perfect shade of green and goes with everything — one of those items that will receive a lot of compliments. Add some simple jewelry to finish off the look!

Warm Weather Soccer Mom Look

Based on your length preference, a pair of gauzy shorts or pants are so comfortable, while also airy, to help you with the heat on the soccer field. Pair with a comfortable white top and you’ve got a simple, crisp look.

I have a previous season’s bright pink and navy gauze shorts from Gap and I wear them all of the time in the summer. They look so cute with their matching tops, but are also perfect for mixing and matching — these Old Navy tanks are very comfortable. I have several and wear them often with my shorts (which are a bit longer and not form fitting, so they balance out the snug top well, at least in my opinion). Highly recommend.

I also have several colorful scarfs that I would like to wear more often than I do, as they add such a nice touch of color and can work as a headband, a scarf, or as a tie around a high or low bun. So, I’ve included this here as inspiration for us both!

We know the fall soccer season can quickly turn from sweltering hot to chilly quite quickly — sometimes in what can seem like a week’s time! When this happens, we know layers are our best friend. This oversized Böhme jacket is one that I grab often because it’s not super heavy, but has a bit of length and sturdiness, so it protects from the chilly winds on the field.

Cardigans are always an easy option — you can layer underneath and over, and play with patterns, colors, and the buttons to make your look trendier or more classic based on your preference.

I’m pretty obsessed with a cheetah / leopard print sneaker and I think these are super cute! They come in a variety of colors / patterns if animal print isn’t your thing. And, I love the touch of color variety with the necklace.

It doesn’t get much easier than throwing on a cute tennis dress! I’m literally wearing one right now because we have pickup soccer later today. Make sure yours has built in shorts & a bra (is there any other way?!) to make your life a bit easier, especially if you’re entertaining other little kids while at practice, or want to multitask and go for a run/walk.

Add some cute touches for layers and for accessorizing, if that’s your thing. I really do love a fanny pack or belt bag at practice — do you? It makes it easy to hang with my younger child on the playground, equipped with band aids, hand sanitizer, a granola bar, my phone, keys, etc., rather than having to run across the fields to get to our larger tote bag and picnic blanket for those items. This way, the larger purse or bag can hang in the car, and you don’t have to stuff your pockets full of these items.

Face painting: you can hire someone for this, or just grab a volunteer who is willing to play with paint for a bit! A teen or tween would also be a great option, especially if you can pay them for their time.
Dance / freeze dance: self explanatory!
Pass the parcel: This is a really fun game that involves passing a big “parcel” around a circle until the music stops. Whoever is holding the parcel when the music stops gets to open a layer of the parcel and receives a gift. It’s played similarly to hot potato.
Piñata: how about a sweet rainbow one? Soccer? Colorful ice pop or rainbow Lego? So many great options!
Scavenger hunt: there are obviously many variations of a scavenger hunt, but you could make this simple and break teams into colors. They then have to find themed pictures that are matted on that color paper, or hidden colored objects, and bring them back to trade them in for a trinket or a party bag.
Duckies in the pond: this one is such a fave and great for really little kids. Grab some duckies, and a kiddie swimming pool (this one is cheap and foldable, which is easy for transport) filled with just a bit of water, and put a colored dot on the bottom with a sharpie. Put the duckies in the pool, and kids get to pick a ducky. Based on the color on the bottom of the duck, they get to choose a prize from the corresponding bucket.
Lollipop tree: You could make your own lollipop tree, or buy one. This is another fun game! You probably know it. The kids get to grab a lollipop and take a look at the bottom of their stick. Depending on the color on the bottom of the stick, they get to choose a prize from the corresponding prize bucket.
Play-doh, kinetic sand station: one of my daughter’s recent favorites is to scoop kinetic sand into these cones after taking everyone’s “orders”.
Art stations: coloring books or coloring pages based on the party theme or season (find these free online), puff paint, jewelry making, spin art, sponge painting, etc.

Like we noted above, a party at a park is so wonderful for many reasons, one of which is because kids are great at creating their own fun. You can trust that they will have a blast bouncing around the playground without anything extra, but if you’re in the mood to bring along a few other elements, here are a few ideas:

Of course, we need snackie snacks! Again, this can be as simple or complex as you’d like; just be sure to consider nut allergies, including tree nut. Sometimes parents ask this when RSVPing or they ask on the invitations, which is nice.

Cut up fruit, clementines
Cut up veggies and dips (ranch, hummus)
Bite sized sandwiches (purchased pre-made or put together with slider or dinner rolls or sandwiches cut into fours)
Pizza (double sliced)
Hoagie slices
Mini muffins
Snacks: pretzels, popcorn, pita chips, potato chips, veggie sticks, Pirate’s booty
Individually sized snack bags

You are probably sick of hearing me say it, but this is the whole point — you can do as much or as little as you would like here!

Balloons: obviously balloons are a great option and you only need a few for it to really feel like a party. We bought this giant rainbow number 4 and hung it from a tree, and it was perfect. We also had these unicorns on hand, which were fun because the kids could use them as toys.
Rainbow honeycomb centerpiece: this was an awesome and easy decor piece that we plopped right in the middle of the table! You can certainly find various honeycomb options based on your party theme.
Colorful or themed plates, plasticware: plates and plasticware are an easy way to add to the decor. For my daughter’s birthday, I brought some bowls and dishes to create punches of color and add to the rainbow theme.
Chalk the walk: grab some chalk and write “Happy Birthday!” to the birthday kiddo.
Streamers in trees, just like the photo
Colorful pennants (these pennants are great – we bought them years ago and still use them) to hang from trees, or on a table with these cool metal stands

Pick the time of day based on the season: while there are many factors to consider when choosing the time of the party (nap time, other commitment that day, etc.), consider when the park is likely to be most temperate based on the season. You may also want to take into account how busy the park is likely to be at any given point.
Consider purchasing or borrowing a pop-up tent for drizzly or hot, sunny days so kids can take a break, if there’s no pavilion at your park. If you’re a sports parent, you will have a million opportunities to reuse this and won’t regret your decision to purchase one.
Extra folded blankets are great to offer guests during the chillier months
Will you need a cooler to hold drinks or cold food? If so, consider marking the coolers with what’s in them, so people know they are welcome to open them. A closed cooler doesn’t scream, “please open me”. You could also use an open container like a galvanized bin or bucket to hold drinks.
Rain date: because a party at a park always runs the risk of being completely rained out, choose a rain date and include it on the invite, or have it prepared to text your guests if need be.

Anyone who knows my now-9-year-old associates him with all things soccer and Lionel Messi (he received an 800 page Messi memoir as a gift!). For that reason, he wanted a soccer themed birthday party this year. I’m sharing all the details in hopes that they are helpful to you in your planning! Let’s gooooooo!

Soccer Themed Birthday Planning

Our first step in the process was deciding where to host the party. My son has had parties out of the home the last few years, so we decided we wanted something more low key and affordable than spending hundreds of dollars on a venue, and then more on food, decor, etc. For this reason, we decided to host at home (and ended up with 10 boys at the house!).

I’m not sure about you, but I really enjoy when others share their thought process / brainstorming that goes into party planning, so I thought I would offer the same here for you in case you also find it helpful.

Brainstorming for the soccer party:

I wanted to use a lot of what we have for the decor. I have found that over the years I’ll purchase decor items and then they sit around in hopes that I’ll use them again (Minecraft, farming, Nerf…). This year I took the time to comb through my son’s soccer themed bedroom for decor items the weeks prior to his birthday and stored them all together in one place. This made it really easy for me to access them the weekend of the party. In years prior, especially since I have small children, it often felt easier to buy decorations for every party so I didn’t have to go digging around. This year I challenged myself to think about this differently.

I eased up on the pressure I put on myself to make the party look a specific way. This is always a challenge for me (maybe you too?), but I’ve gotten exponentially better over the years. I remind myself of several things: this party is for a 9 year old boy and his friends — they could care less what it looks like. They just want to bounce around the house and have a blast together. While I want the party to feel special to my son, my idea of special vs. his idea of special are different.

Now, on to the party itself!

The Best Gifts for Soccer Lovers

Initially, this one felt a little tricky as my husband and I were thinking through potential activities for the kids…

My son’s birthday is in the wintertime ❄️ and we also have a very small yard, so we couldn’t have the boys play soccer for most of the party.

While we initially planned for the boys to play soccer for part of the party (my son will play soccer in the snow, rain, or sleet — you name it), there was a huge sheet of thick ice over our patio and yard from a previous storm. This particular year my son also had an indoor soccer game the day of his party, so we held a late afternoon event.

Here are the activity options we came up with for the party, knowing the kids may get bored with some quicker than others, or that they may not get through them all:

OUTSIDE SOCCER complete with goals, a glow soccer ball, pinnies, lights, and Daddy as ref.
GUESS THE TEAM LOGO: super easy. The boys separated into teams and guessed the logo via a YouTube clip that my son had found. The clip featured the logo of a team on the screen with a countdown timer and that was that! Winners won a a little package of trading cards, these cute soccer candies, and soccer stickers.
GUESS THE FLAG: We didn’t get to this one, but it would have been fun. We have the The World Game after friends introduced us to it and we had a blast with it. Our plan was to either find a YouTube clip in the same vein as the one above, but with flags from various countries, or just using the flag via cards on The World Game.
WHO KNOWS THE BIRTHDAY BOY BEST: This game was super cute and made my son feel very special. We came up with a bunch of questions about my son and I created a handout via Canva. We made some questions pretty easy and others a bit harder. I had my son answer the questions ahead of time and then his friends answered them at the party once dinner was winding down. It was really cute to hear everyone’s answers and see who truly did know him best. The boys were hilarious with some of their guesses and the kiddos were all such good sports — they had more fun than I expected with this one!

TRADING CARD STATION: Fun and easy! The cool thing about this one is that you could get really creative if you were up for it. I had saved some large boxes leading up to the party, as I was planning to make a booth with a fun sign. It didn’t end up happening, so I just laid the boxes on the ground like a table, threw this soccer table cloth over it and we were good to go!
FIFA SOCCER VIDEO GAMES: An easy option that requires no explanation!
FOOSBALL: We have a small foosball game that we setup on the table after dinner. This worked really well for the kids who didn’t want to play video games, were waiting for a turn, or just wanted to switch things up.
MLS GAME: There was a Major League Soccer game on TV during the latter part of the evening. We kept this in mind in case we wanted to switch over to this, especially because the team was one of my son’s favorites. Another option would be to put on a clip of the “Best Soccer Highlights” or something of the sort based on your child’s interests.
COLORED LIGHTS AND CUSTOM PLAYLIST: We installed these lights (they were super easy and are changed via an app) after being inspired by them at our friend’s house. We planned to turn them on to rotating colors during the later half of the party and had my son’s custom soccer playlist ready to go to give this the party vibe.
- UPDATE: It’s now a year later and they’re still installed. We changed them to cheer for specific football teams during the games, as well as pink for Inter Miami, of course!
TATTOOS & STICKERS ON THE TABLE: simply throw bulk soccer stickers and tattoos on the dinner table for another thing for the kids to do.

Soccer Themed Birthday Invitations

We kicked off the birthday with a soccer themed birthday invitation, of course. Here are a few options if you’re looking to do the same:

While I love (and have in the all previous years) handing out paper invitations, it has become a challenge because my son is not allowed to hand them out in class anymore (unless the entire class is invited). So, this year we just went with a digital version which I texted to parents, which is the norm around here. Is it the same for you? While I miss paper invites, I can appreciate this new style of invite.

Soccer Party Favors

Fortunately, this one ended up being very easy. My son is very into trading cards right now (there’s been a boom since COVID apparently), so we bought packs for each child: they each received soccer, football, and Pokémon cards. This worked out nicely because those who didn’t have a ton of cards got to use those to trade during the party. Since one of the soccer themed activities was “trading cards”, this made the favor more dynamic. Plus, the kids love to see what they “pull” in their packs.

We went to a local sports store which sells these trading cards. If you don’t have a local store, you can certainly by them online. My husband also made a trip to a flea market which has Pokémon cards in bulk which are very reasonably priced. We broke those down into packs and handed out the extras to the game winners.

This was an affordable way to incorporate Pokémon, which I had initially nixed given that we were already giving several other packs as favors. But, it was a hit and the extra cards really came in handy when there ended up being a bunch of winners for the team games and I didn’t plan for enough favors — whoops! I quickly threw together extra packs of Pokémon cards and we were good to go!

I decided to add a little more interest to the table by using a green paper plate underneath the soccer plate. Coupled with the seagrass chargers I had on hand, both broke up the soccer ball patterns from the tablecloth and the soccer plate.

Here’s another great soccer plate option from My Mind’s Eye which boasts a bit of a different style with a scalloped edge.

I highly recommend scouring a home goods store for various paper goods and party decorations. I do this in the weeks leading up to a birthday because they typically have great finds which are obviously reasonably priced. It’s also just so nice to hold things in your hand and visualize the item on the table or in the room. That’s how I found the fun “Let’s Go!” pennants — it was superbowl time and I was able to utilize them the party!

Wrapping up our soccer themed birthday party extravaganza…

We made one room really soccer heavy (our dining room) with the items we shared here. I added green balloons and soccer balloons (which we had on hand) because I think balloons really make a party feel like a party — for kids and adults alike! If you incorporate balloons, be sure to add 2-3 outside the door to your home. This gets the birthday child excited, as well as the guests!
